Evanston-Skokie D65 and the Family Action Network (FAN)present essayist and cultural critic William Deresiewicz, Ph.D., a former Yale University English professor whose brand-new bestseller, Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life has struck a nerve among many parents, students and educators about the role of higher education in shaping the lives of young adults. Is college only about preparing an individual to achieve material success? What are the metrics of success more generally? Do the liberal arts, in particular, have any relevance in the 21st century, if all that is valued by this nation’s best and brightest is high socio-economic status?
This past summer, Dr. Deresiewicz’s article for the New Republic, “Don’t Send You Kid to the Ivy League,”was the most shared article in their history. Neither psychologist nor social scientist, his observations are those of someone educated from college through a Ph.D. at an Ivy League, and who then taught hundreds of students at an Ivy League for over a decade. His presentation is sure to spark many conversations, whether you agree with his views or not.
