Community members are invited to attend Robert Crown Center’s 40th annual spring ice show, “Magic Starts with a Wish,” on April 30 and May 1 at the Center, located at 1701 Main St., in Evanston.
This year’s program will feature special performances by 2010 U.S. Olympian and 2016 Four Continents silver medalist Mirai Nagasu, as well as hundreds of Robert Crown Center figure skating school students and professionals.
Performances will take place on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1 at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for reserved seating and $9 for general admission. Tickets may be purchased online at cityofevanston.org/crown (general only), by calling 847-448-8258, or at the door. The show is suitable for all ages.

Join us on Robert Crown Community Center’s Main Rink for an Easter Sunday Skating Party!
The “Jelly Bean Count” prize will be announced during the event and there will be a special guest appearance by the Easter Bunny!

Evanston Hockey invites boys and girls to Robert Crown Center on Saturday, Nov. 7, for a Try Hockey For Free clinic as part of Come Play Hockey Month.
Starting at 2:10 p.m., local youth, ages 4 to 9, are encouraged to experience ice hockey for the first time and learn the basic skills in a fun, safe environment.
“We are proud to once again host a Try Hockey for Free event and look forward to welcoming families to our home rink, Robert Crown Center, to try the great sport of ice hockey,” said Evanston Hockey President Matt Devine. “Our goal is for these families to enjoy watching their kids learn new skills with big smiles on their faces.”
Evanston Hockey coaches and members of the Evanston Hockey high school team will be on hand to run players through basic skills, drills and a scrimmage. Participants will receive a goodie bag with stickers, pencils and participation certificate.
Evanston Hockey encourages those who have access to equipment, to please bring it. If participants do not have any equipment, they need to bring:
- A loose-fitting pair of sweatpants or snow pants
- A pair of gloves (they don’t need to be hockey gloves- mittens are fine)
- A helmet
- A smile
Robert Crown Center has skates, and Evanston Hockey has a limited amount of equipment available to lend. Participants should arrive 45 minutes early to check in and get fitted for any equipment.
USA Hockey’s Try Hockey program, with the support of the National Hockey League and NHL member clubs, among others, is designed to provide youth hockey associations a national platform to introduce new kids to the sport. USA Hockey has close to 500 locations offering this unique opportunity to kids nationwide.

Tune Out TV Week has been replaced with Screen-Free Week. Computers, TVs and handheld devices have completely integrated with our lives. We need to take some time to step away from the devices and enjoy the people and nature around us.
The Ecology Center will be hosting after-school activities and the Robert Crown Center will offer free ice-skating for up to 50 children on the studio rink. Drop in at the Ecology Center to see what we are doing each day and enjoy ice-skating at the Robert Crown Center.

Evanston community members are invited to attend Robert Crown Community Center’s 39th annual spring ice show, “Music of the Night,” on April 25 and 26 at the Center, located at 1701 Main St., Evanston. The event will feature hundreds of figure skating school students and professionals performing to live Broadway music.
Performances will take place on Saturday, April 25 at 6 p.m. and Sunday, April 26 at 2 p.m. The show is suitable for all ages. Tickets are $9 for general seating and $10 for reserved seating.

Evanston’s 40th Annual Fall Flea Market will be held on Saturday, November 1, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Robert Crown Center, 1701 Main St.
There’s something for everyone at the market. More than 70 tables will sell a wide variety of items at this year’s event, including sporting equipment, household goods, jewelry, books, toys, games and much more. Proceeds from table rentals benefit the Robert Crown Center Advisory Board.

On Sat., May 10, the Robert Crown Community Center and Ice Complex, 1701 Main St., invites families to celebrate Mother’s Day on the ice from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Arboretum Egg Hunt. Evanston youth are invited to participate in the Ladd Arboretum’s Egg Hunt on Sat., April 19 at the Evanston Ecology Center, 2024 McCormick Blvd. Children ages 18 months to 8 years old, as well as children with special needs, will learn about bearded dragons and take part in activities and crafts. All participants must bring a basket or bag for collecting. Preregistration is required, along with a $5 sign-up fee. Residents can choose from four one-hour sessions to best fit their schedules. Bunny Bash Ice Skating Event. Residents are invited to attend Robert Crown Community Center’s first-ever “Bunny Bash Skate” from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. It will feature giveaways, including gift certificates, assorted chocolate candies, a giant jar of jelly beans and more! Find a treasure at the Spring Flea Market. Head over to Robert Crown Center, 1701 Main St., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. This market connects people who own great “stuff” they no longer need with folks who like a bargain and believe in the three R’s: reduce, reuse and recycle. All 75 tables have been reserved. Items for sale vary each year, but you can expect to find sporting goods, books, household items, clothes, attic treasures and jewelry.
Registration for the American Youth Soccer Organization (AYSO) for next year–fall 2013/spring 2014–is now in progress.
Children between the ages of 4 and 18 as of July 31 of the year in which the fall season begins can play AYSO soccer.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is Monday, January 21. The Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center, Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center, Noyes Cultural Arts Center and Ecology Center will be closed. The Main Library and the North Branch will be open. The Chicago Ave./Main St. Branch will be closed.
