Evanston Honors Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. – January 14


On Saturday, January 14, at noon, all are invited to the City’s “Day of Celebration Honoring the Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” at the Fleetwood-Jourdain Community Center. The event will pay tribute to Dr. King through music, dance and excerpts from his speeches. Admission is free and open to the public. Our youth leadership committee has decided this year’s theme will be “Defiance with Purpose.” The event will feature artistic performances by youth from 11 schools across Evanston and Skokie who seek to realize Dr. King’s vision today. The event is free, family-friendly, and open to all ages. Immediately following the program, join us across the street at our new youth center and headquarters (located at 1911 Church Street) for a community reception featuring youth artwork and tours of our new building.

Outdoor Ice Skating Now Open!


Outdoor ice rinks are now open at all three Evanston locations: Ackerman Park, Baker Park, and Arrington Lagoon at Dawes Park. As weather conditions change, visit the City’s website or text SKATE to 847-448-4311 for an automated response, to check the Current Outdoor Rink Status 

Rink Locations:

  • Ackerman Park, Central St. at McDaniel Ave.
  • Baker Park, Forest Ave. at Keeney St.

Evanston’s 2017 Summer Camp Guide Available Online


Evanston’s 2017 Summer Camp Guide is now available for viewing online! Printed guides will be distributed to Evanston public and private schools the week of January 16.

This year, a new, simpler camp registration process will begin online and at the Robert Crown Community Center on Saturday, February 4, from 8 a.m. to noon. No more waiting for camp lottery results! For more information, see page 3 of the guide.

FREE New Year’s Eve Rides on the CTA and Pace








Let the CTA or Pace be your driver this New Year’s Eve. The Chicago Transit Authority and Pace Bus will provide free rides on all trains and buses from 10 p.m.on Saturday through 4 a.m. on Sunday. The Purple Line will also offer extended service.

SUMMER PLANNING – Northwestern Fencing – Summer camp


Try something new this summer and join Northwestern Fencing in June.

Dates: June 9-12, 2017

Time: 10:30am – 4:30pm

Location: Patten Gymnasium, 2407 Sheridan Road, Evanston, IL 60208

Cost: $395 for the week or $125 per day. Register by April 30 for discounted price of $350 for the week.

Open to any and all ages 12 and up.  Competitive experience recommended.

Plan to bring a lunch, a water bottle and a notebook.

Community Kwanzaa Celebration – December 26

Girls Play Sports – 4th – 8th Grade Winter Basketball Tournament – REGISTER NOW

January 4, 2017 – 9:00am at ETHS

clubgps_3cThis tournament will begin with a skills segment to ensure the proper fundamentals are
taught. Girls will register as individuals and then teams will be assembled to provide competitive
balance. Rules are implemented throughout the tournament to reinforce the importance of
proper fundamentals. This tournament consists of pool play, followed by a bracketed
tournament. The GPS Basketball Tournament will expand and deepen our girls’ connection and
interest in sports while giving them the hands-on experience to strengthen their confidence to

Holiday Tree Lighting TODAY – Friday, December 9


Celebrate the holiday season at the Evanston Tree Lighting ceremony at Fountain Square. Join Santa and Mrs. Claus to enjoy an evening of musical performances, holiday cheer, hot chocolate, and watch the tree light up at 5:30pm. We’re also excited to announce that the Cubs mascot Clark and the White Sox mascot Southpaw will celebrate with the Evanston community! Look for them in the crowd!
